Speech impairments
Speech impairments can occur in older people for various reasons. Our institute can help if, for example, individual sounds, words or sentences can no longer be pronounced correctly, word-finding difficulties are present or articulation is slurred.
For example, if…
- the right words cannot be found (word-finding disorders)
- you often do not understand what is being said (blurred articulation)
- Words or syllables are repeated
- after a stroke and for various neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, MS, etc...
Swallowing disorders
Swallowing disorders and problems with chewing are common challenges in old age. Our therapists offer specialised support for impaired swallowing, frequent choking and other eating and drinking problems. We also help with paralyses in the mouth and face area as well as excessive salivation.
If eating, drinking / swallowing are impaired:
- the affected person frequently chokes
- the affected person cannot chew
- only soft food can be eaten
- solid foods such as meat are avoided or refused
- Increased salivation occurs
- Paralyses in the mouth and/or facial area are present
Respiratory problems
Breathing problems, constricted airways and frequent colds can significantly impair quality of life. Our therapeutic approaches aim to improve breathing and alleviate ENT complaints. Our therapies also offer effective support for frequent asthma or bronchitis.
If there are problems in the ENT area / breathing:
- the affected person breathes through the mouth, the mouth is often slightly or widely open
- the airways are constricted
- the person concerned suffers from asthma
- frequently suffer from colds/bronchitis/ pneumonia
- the affected person snores and/or stops breathing
Voice disorders and abnormalities
Voice disorders are often characterised by a conspicuous voice with hoarseness, frequent throat clearing or a nasal vocal tone. Our speech therapy treatments help to strengthen and improve the voice so that those affected can communicate clearly and distinctly again.
If the voice is conspicuous and the person…
- is often hoarse
- frequently clears his throat or coughs
- has a nasal vocal tone
has dental and jaw problems
Misalignments of the teeth or bite as well as problems with the prosthesis can severely impair well-being. Our team works closely with dentists to develop suitable treatment measures and improve our patients’ quality of life.
If there are abnormalities in the teeth and/or jaw area:
- Tooth and/or bite misalignments are present
- the patient grinds his teeth and has problems with the prosthesis
Procedure for a speech therapy session
Comprehensive diagnostics, both at the start of treatment and as a follow-up diagnosis during treatment, form the basis for individually tailored therapy. We work closely with relatives and continuously adapt the measures to meet their needs. Liaising with nursing staff is also important, particularly in the areas of oral hygiene and eating and drinking. Our therapists provide appropriate guidance to achieve the best possible results.
Who bears the costs of the therapy?
The costs for the speech therapy examination and therapy are covered by the health insurance company if a doctor’s prescription is available.
A corresponding prescription is issued by a general practitioner, neurologist, dentist or ear, nose and throat specialist, depending on the disorder.
